Maer’s Holiday Playlist – Part Two

With Black Friday madness upon us, and thoughts of Christmas on many minds, I’ll start off Part 2 of my Holiday Songs with one of my all-time favorites by Trans-Siberian Orchestra – “Christmas Eve/ Sarajevo.” Creating an upbeat version of “Carol of the Bells” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” was a stroke of genius that has made this a holiday classic for me.

I love TSO’s music and many of my fave Christmas songs are on their albums. But there are so many holiday songs I love that narrowing down to twenty-seven is going to be tough. I hope you enjoy my list!

Maer’s Holiday Playlist – Part One

A week out from Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Where did the year go? I’m not quite sure, but it’s been one wild ride.

In honor of the holidays, once a day I’ll post a song link either here or on my Facebook Author Page. For the next week it will be Thanksgiving songs – a “Thank You” song on each day.

First up is a band my brother, Shawn, has loved for decades. He played their music so much as a child that I couldn’t listen to them for something like 20 years…seriously! The musical Mama Mia broke the Abba blockade, and their “Thank You for the Music” is an appropriate beginning to my holiday playlist.

11/20/14 –  Abba – “Thank You for the Music – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfM9gQkfwyg
11/21/14 – Bon Jovi – “Thank You for Loving Me” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1ZFkmTHTQ0
11/22/14 – Ella Fitzgerald – “Thanks for the Memory” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkspDkGPSPg
11/23/14 – Alanis Morisette – “Thank U” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOgpT5rEKIU
11/24/14 – Dido – “Thank You” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TO48Cnl66w#t=23
11/25/14 – Earth, Wind & Fire – Gratitude – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ1e6lmVluw
11/26/14 – American Greetings – Funny Thanksgiving Song – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkmpd3Xp2GM
11/27/14 – Sister Sledge – We Are Family – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBpYgpF1bqQ

Relics

Most of Thulu and La Fi’s clients are dead. Which is perfect since their detective agency caters to the supernatural. But a simple job finding a lost locket leads to a big case tracking relics for an ancient daemon.

The daemon needs the relics to keep a dangerous portal closed. His enemy, Gabriel, wants the relics to open the portal and give his people access to a new feeding ground – Earth.

Caught on live TV, other portals begin to open and the creatures of magic return to Earth. The people of Earth are not alone, but will soon wish they were.

When Gabriel threatens their family, Thulu and La Fi’s search becomes personal. The couple will need powerful help in the race to find the relics before Gabriel does. But maybe that’s what ghostly friends, magical allies and daemonic clients are for.

When the creatures of myth and magic return to Earth, they’re nothing like your mother’s fairy tales.

“Ghost Memory”

La Fi is not having a normal day. She broke someone’s nose, embarrassed her fiancé, Thulu, and now a dead guy is on her doorstep. Although seeing the dead is not unusual for the young medium, since she and Thulu regularly deal with the supernatural. Thulu can find anything that’s lost and the amnesiac ghost is missing money, along with his memory.

Peter Swanson used to stash money throughout his San Francisco home. Now he can’t remember his hiding places, and his aging partner needs the money. That’s not normally a problem for Thulu, but some of the money is missing from the house. Thulu and La Fi must broaden the search for cash long gone, and that could prove tricky in more ways than one.

“Ghost Memory” is a Modern Magics Story set in the Relics universe. Bonus Material includes Chapter 1 from the novel, Relics.

Cozy Dark – Modern Magics

relics - ebook cover high resolutionThroughout the last year, I have struggled somewhat to assign genres and writing styles to my series, Modern Magics. Yes, it’s definitely genre-bending, but that’s not much help, is it? It’s Urban Fantasy meets Paranormal Mystery meets Sci Fi, so any one of those will fit the three books, Relics, Portals and Magics. The four prequel novelettes are firmly Paranormal Mystery, so they are easy.

But there has also been much discussion with my friends as to my style of writing in this series. Some have said it can go Young Adult, even though the main characters are far too old to qualify for that once the books start. And yes, the writing style is mostly family friendly, although there are some dark scenes.

But I finally have a description that perfectly fits this series! I was chatting with my friend Danielle DeVor this morning, discussing the different levels of dark – whether it be Paranormal, Mystery, Horror, Thriller. I’d mentioned to her how I thought some of Anne Rice’s work was dark, but Danielle explained my idea of dark was rather – well, let’s say not very dark.

Here’s the snippet from our chat:

Danielle:  There was this movement in the 1980’s and early 1990’s called splatterpunk. It was very much extreme violence and gore. Ron Dee is one of the main writers of splatterpunk.

Maer:  Oh yeah…probably not my thing. lol

Danielle:  No, definitely not.

Maer:  I prefer cozy dark. :p

Danielle:  You totally have to start using that.

And she’s right! Because this is the description I’ve been looking to use. Modern Magics has many dark scenes, but they aren’t edgy dark. Nope, they are cozy dark. And there are elements of humor throughout most of the series. So, now I have an answer when people ask me what I write. Although I will still need to use the genre-bending descriptors, now I have something that fits my style.

Who else writes cozy dark novels? I’m sure there must be others.

Relics will be releasing with a new edition in the near future!
