Just send to maer(at)maerwilson(dot)com and I will get it out to you. 🙂

Unwanted Ghost sm

Thulu & La Fi have inherited an old, furnished Victorian. What they weren’t expecting was that the furnishings included a ghost.

Usually the Thulukans are happy to take on supernatural clients for their detective agency. But there’s something about Darla Redding that bothers La Fi – and with good reason. They discover that Darla has a much darker past than hinted at by her “normal” life. She’s definitely not a ghost they want haunting them. So, if they want to be rid of their unwelcome house ghost, Thulu and La Fi need to solve her murder.

“Unwanted Ghost” is the second prequel novelette to Relics in “The Thulukans Chronicles.”

Cienna – Settling In

cienna

An update on the new puppy is due. Cienna is now over 6 months old. She has settled in with her two sisters, Tréa and Chloe…more or less. Tréa is still less than thrilled, although seems resigned that the new puppy is here to stay.

We even had success on our trip into Vegas to see our vet. During the first trip into Vegas Tréa sat up the entire time. Usually she curls up and sleeps…but having to share her car seat for the first time did not please her. I could see her start to nod off, but if I turned my head even slightly toward her, she was immediately awake and alert…staring directly at me and letting me know she was not happy. Cienna was asleep next to her. Chloe was curled up in her own car seat in the back. But yeah…sixty miles of evil eye from a pissed-off chihuahua.

So getting her to sleep on the next trip into Vegas was a major success. I don’t see how Cienna was comfortable, but every time I moved her head inside the seat, she went back to this position.

Trea & Cienna

I doubt they will ever be friends like Chloe and Cienna are now, but that’s not a bad thing. Sometimes the two poodles play so loudly, with growling and such, that I have to tell them to be quiet. Getting quiet time like this, is a treat. However, right now, Tréa still greets Cienna’s overtures with a snarl.

Chloe & Cienna

It’s been long enough now that I cannot imagine being without this little bundle of fun. She topped 4.5 pounds at the vet, so she gained a pound. She doesn’t seem much taller…well, maybe a smidge. She has been a little love and is learning her tricks. Not as fast as Chloe did, but she is learning them. She is family now.

The 4 Question Blog Challenge

FB Covers

The talented author, Louann Carroll, has tagged me in a blog challenge. Louann writes in several genres: sci fi, paranormal and children’s books. You can find Louann’s work at her Amazon Author Page.

Now here are my Q&As!

What am I working on?

I’m waiting on the edits from my fabulous editor, Jen Ryan, for Book 3, Magics, in my series, The Thulukan Chronicles. Meantime, I’m writing a Biography/Memoir on the years I was friends with author Philip K. Dick, the last ten years of his life.

I’m also working on a new sci fi series set a couple hundred years in the future. Set during a time when violent crime is rare, it’s about a woman who is a Truthsayer, called upon to go off-world  to solve a rare murder.

How does my writing differ from others of its genre?

As far as The Thulukan Chronicles goes, it’s a little warmer than most Urban Fantasy novels. My heroine is happily married. The couple faces some very tough cases to solve for others, but at the end of the day, they have a large and loving family for support.

Also I love apocalyptic novels, but I always want to know how they got there. That’s usually only a small portion of the story – if it’s explained at all. In this series, we see the entire process – from an Earth as we know it to the first glimmerings of magic returning to Earth and finally to the chaotic repercussions when magic is the norm and those without magic are a minority.

Why do I write what I do?

My first series is genre-bending Urban Fantasy / Science Fiction / Paranormal Mystery. I adore these genres, so it was natural to write something that blends them. I love creating “what ifs” and seeing where the characters take me.

Of course, the Bio/Memoir will be non-fiction, which is a departure for me. That one is taking a lot more work.

I have several other projects in various stages of completion…all fantasy or sci fi.

How does my writing process work?

I’m quite organic in my process. The characters come first for me. It’s all about who they are as people – what makes them tick. I put them in a situation and let them take me on their journey. I sometimes will keep a list like a timeline, but I do not outline. Too often my characters surprise me, so I like the freedom to let them go where they will.

I haven’t even outlined the Bio/Memoir, although I probably should. For that one, I’m going back to the 1970s. The overall events are very clear, but there are little details I’ve forgotten over the years. To help with that I’m immersing myself in the time as much as I can: playing the music I listened to back then, looking at pictures from the time and even burning strawberry incense.

Time to tag my three authors, in case they care to play:

A to Z Challenge – Z is for Zone

Z

A perfectly good word to end the month. It applies to so many different things. “In the zone” is where I am when I’m writing…also sometimes when I’m listening to music. So it’s a very focused state.

Other times I might be zoned out, as in my brain has overloaded and is no longer functional in any real sense.

Or it might be the area of a city, like a residential zone. That one’s a bit boring though.

Of course, there is always that famous and best one of all: The Twilight Zone. I adored that series and it had such an impact on me as a kid. Deliciously scary at times.

The list goes on and on and I’m not going to mention them all, but I think it’s great to end with this.

To those who have stuck with me for the month, thanks for reading!

A to Z Challenge – Y is for Yada, Yada, Yada

Y

As the month draws to a close, and I have written more blog posts this month than ever before, this is the phrase that comes to mind. It’s one I use in every day talking, but rarely get to use in writing. So I had to take advantage and use it today. Although I hope the posts I’ve written have not been boring, I suspect that every one was not a bright gem adding meaning to the world.  I know some have been trivial, but hopefully fun.

However, this is a great phrase. I love the way the word sounds and the repetitive use of “yada” carries the meaning, even if you aren’t sure exactly what it means. By the way, “yadaa” is Yiddish for “to know,” which is kinda cool since it indicates you know what the person is talking about and don’t need to elaborate.

Tomorrow is the last day of the A to Z Challenge. Obviosuly the letter will be “Z.”

A to Z – X is for Xenophile

X (1)

A xenophile is someone who is attracted to foreign people and cultures. That’s me. I love meeting new people from different countries, trying new food and learning about different places. The more exotic, the happier I am. The idea of people from other worlds is particularly appealing, which accounts for my love of fantasy and sci fi. I can totally get behind meeting elves and fairies and folks from other planets – as long as I’m not slated to be on the menu anyway.

There are so many wonderful fictional and mythological races, it would be really hard to pick only one. However, if I could choose only one, I’d pick the dragons from the Anne McCaffrey novels. I fell in love with this series years ago. Her vision of dragons is awesome and has been the ultimate image when I think of dragons. Imagine a dragon that you could communicate with and ride and be friends with.

And, yeah, this could have easily come under “wishes.”

Overall, there are tons of cultures I’d like to explore…here on Earth as well as fictional. Some day, my friend…some day.

What will  tomorrow’s word be? Come back for the letter “Y” in the challenge.

A to Z – W is for Wishes

W

Wishes and dreams are an important part of my life. They are what let my imagination soar into new skies and worlds. Most of them are unrealistic and I think that’s okay. I know they are just daydreams and don’t expect them to come true. But without them, I think life would be boring. And without them I doubt I’d be able to write, let alone create my version of the world in my books.

When I was a kid, I had a great imagination. It led me into theatre and the arts, as I mentioned back on “I” day. These days I make it a point to wish for something silly or unrealistic – big or little doesn’t matter. It’s my way of playing pretend, but I think  we have all done this at one time or other. Planned what we would do if we won that big lottery or what our yard would look like with bright flower pots and flowers or even grass.

A yard full of grass is one of those wishes I won’t give into because I live in the desert and maintaining it is a bigger pain than it’s worth. I can always go to the park if I need to see grass, but there are days I wish had a yard of grass instead of rock. Sometimes it”s just the little things. 🙂 Of course, now if I won that lottery? A yard…definitely a yard.

What will  Monday’s word be? Come back for the letter “X” in the challenge.
